Homeschooling Consultations

I have been involved with the homeschooling world for over 25 years, first as a parent, and then participating in the development and ongoing work of North Star: Self-Directed Learning for Teens. North Star is a pioneering, alternative learning center, which offers teens and their families a viable alternative to school during these critical years. I recently retired after being Core Staff at North Star for 18 years. There I mentored teens in one-on-on settings, facilitated teen music ensembles, tutored math and writing, and taught classes such as philosophy, meditation, yoga, stress reduction, world religions, and future studies. I have also consulted with families around the country about how to pursue homeschooling in their family. North Star uses the “unschooling” approach to education, and this philosophy informs my work. In this approach, we believe that learning is natural to life, and we support youth in pursuing what they love, and building upon their natural gifts.

Consultations: I offer consultations on how to implement the “unschooling” approach in your family, particularly focused on the teen years. I also offer counseling and coaching to young adults in their 20s and beyond, as they are trying to decide what to do after college, or how to get on track in their lives if they have dropped out of school. Fees available upon request.
